About The Play

The Incident is a theatrical performance about whether you are ready to stand up for your values when the stakes are raised. The play makes the audience reflect over how we are shaped by our experiences including cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and how it influences how we see the world and how we treat people that are different from us. It makes us look closer at the dichotomy of when a black immigrant woman is one of us and when she is not and allows audiences to reflect over what it means to be a non-white woman in a mostly white male dominated society.

Monica, a Zimbabwean woman moves to Sweden to pursue her PHD studies. While in Sweden, falls in love with Jan, a Swedish headmaster. Jan helps her feel part of Swedish society and convinces her to follow him when he takes up a new job in small town in South Sweden. One day at her new job as a secondary teacher she gets into a quarrel with one of her students. The student then makes an allegation against Monica. As the news of ‘The Incident’ reaches the rest of the school and the people in the small town, the ground under her starts unravel.
